The hacked postal truck
Sometimes seen on the streets of Hampton Roads is a postal truck like no other. This web site serves information about the truck, past present and future. I came up with the idea not knowing about the existance of the truck that
Busch Gardens hired to advertise the Dark Castle ride. My friend Chris Moore told me someone else took my idea, and I was stunned. They didn't really copy my idea of course, it was done by a company from the West coast, whom I was unaware of. It was the first appearance of their AdVans in the Hampton Roads area. Their truck is nicer, but mine was affordable to me and does the job. My goals were to advertise a community website I run, and have some fun. Having fun a is a great part of it. Driving to a mall or a Wal*Mart, throwing on some quirky rock or late 80's/early 90's rap video, cranking up the tunes, keying the ground effect lights and rolling around is a blast. The blank stares and laughter the mail truck gets as it creeps thru the parking lot is almost justification for the entire project.
The real jusitification is advertising my projects. A single advertisement in the local newspaper or a few ads on TV/Radio could cost more than the entire truck and modifications. I can't afford to pay their rates for advertising, so I have to go the gurilla route. There are really no outlets in the Hampton Roads market for low cost advertising. I advertise in Richmond's local independant music newspapers for $25 a month (quarter page), but the local music papers are much more expensive (Portfolio and NineVolt wanted some $500 and up.) The truck stands out and probably gets more attention than any print advertisement would. There are some other geeky ideas I have in mind for it assuming I can get a T-Mobile sponsorship (hint). In addition to the advertising motive, I needed a truck to move around various computing equipment and household items. So here it is.
Media
I believe the truck is to be featured in O'Reilly's Make magazine #07. More info as I find out! Make magazine is a great
quarterly magazine availible on newsstands in Hampton Roads (CompUSA, Barnes and Nobles and other book sellers.)
Also, we will be doing a feature on the postal truck for our own IPTV show called protovision.tv. You can
download the episodes for free using BitTorrent via our website. This will be availible only after the
Make magazine article.
